  1.        Welcome to the WaverlyStreet Easy Money Program (version 1.3)

  3.      Easy Money (EZM) is a quick and easy-to-use means to record where all
  4. your money comes from and where it goes. I set out to write it after becoming
  5. frustrated with several other popular "money" programs, all of which seemed a
  6. lot more complicated than they needed to be (or at least a lot more than *I*
  7. wanted). All I wanted was a (slightly) glorified ledger book on the computer
  8. screen, where I could simply note how much money I had spent on what, and
  9. then be able to review the information and print simple reports.

  11.      Using EZM is quick and painless. You can easily start the program, enter
  12. in several expenses, and get back out in a matter of seconds. This high
  13. speed, no nonsense operation makes it easy to get in the habit of using the  
  14. program every day.  
  15.  
  16.      EZM organizes records according to user-defined categories. For example,
  17. you might set up categories for "work", "food", "shelter", "utilities",
  18. etc... Whenever you make or spend any money, make an entry under the  
  19. appropriate category. If you keep this up on a regular basis, you will be  
  20. rewarded with some genuinely useful composite information.  
  21.  
  22.      The EZM Macro utility allows you to automate the recording of recurring  
  23. expenses and income, such as payroll checks. Macro files can be written to  
  24. automatically make a number of entries at the same time.
  25.  
  26.      The EZM Reports utility allows you to specify exactly which categories,  
  27. and which range of dates to include. All reports have a summary section  
  28. showing the sub-totals for each category, the percentage of the grand total,  
  29. and the grand total. There is also a simple bar graph in the summary section.  
  30. At your option, the summary is followed by a complete listing of each line  
  31. item, grouped under category headers and divided into "money IN" and "money  
  32. OUT".

  34.      If desired, you may set up passcode protection, where the program will  
  35. not start unless the correct code is first entered. (The passcode requirement  
  36. may turned "off" or "on" at any time.)

  38.      Screen colors may be modified however you see fit, and there is a small
  39. "reminder" utility to keep you from forgetting important things.
  40.  
  41.      EZM requires an IBM-compatible PC running DOS 3.1 or better, about 250K
  42. memory, color VGA display, and free disk space greater than the size of the
  43. EZM data files. If you have a RAM drive configured, you may direct EZM to use
  44. it for temporary file processing (greatly reducing hard disk activity).

  48.      The top-of-screen "function bar" has been completely re-worked so that
  49. all available control options are shown at all times. Some redundant controls
  50. have been removed (ie: in previous versions, either F2 or INSERT would add a
  51. new record; now only the more intuitive INSERT is there).

  53.      A completely new "word search" function has been added. Type in a word
  54. (or part of a word) and Easy Money will search all your records and display
  55. entries containing that word. This is very handy for finding things.
  56.  
  57.      The option to shell to an external text editor has been added. This can
  58. be done when reports are printed to the screen, and in the macro utility. Now
  59. it is possible to add more extensive remarks to reports, and to create and
  60. edit macro files, without leaving the program. Use your own favorite text
  61. editor to do this, rather than learning how to operate another. The default
  62. external editor is the DOS EDIT program. Over-ride this with a command-line
  63. option. An excellent choice for an alternate editor is READ by WellsCom. READ
  64. can handle large files, includes a word-wrap option, and is just all-round
  65. better than EDIT. READ is inexpensive shareware, and can be downloaded from
  66. http://users.aol.com/wellscom/ or most shareware archives.

  68.      The macro utility has been made much more friendly. There is now a small
  69. menu of choices - Play, Edit, or Make New. The Make New option starts your
  70. external editor with a macro template file, complete with instructions.

  72.      The screen can now be hidden from view with one keystroke. This is useful
  73. when (for example) you are reviewing what you have spent on christmas so far,
  74. and one of your kids charges into the room. Press the "h" key, and the screen
  75. is instantly hidden. If you are using a start-up passcode, it will be required
  76. to re-display the screen.

  78.       And, a few small bugs have been tracked down and exterminated!

  82.      EZM comes in two different versions. The first is an evaluation version
  83. (EZM[version number]E.EXE). The evaluation version is fully functional, but
  84. it "nags" you a little bit. If you like it, send in for registered version -
  85. no more nagging! Feel free to share the EVALUATION version with others.

  87.      The use of the REGISTERED version requires that a registration fee be  
  88. paid to WaverlyStreet. Each individual who uses the registered version must  
  89. pay the registration fee - the program may not be copied and shared with  
  90. other people.

  108.      (By the way, Easy Money is a replacement for an earlier program I did
  109. called PER12. The QBasic source code for PER12 was included in William Yu's
  110. "All Basic Code" archives (the last packet in 1995, I think). There is a
  111. utility available to convert the old PER12 data files into the new format
  112. (useful on the off chance that you were using PER12). Let me know if you need
  113. the conversion utility.)

  123.      Well, OK, at this writing there is only *1* other WaverlyStreet product,  
  124. but hey, I'm looking forward, alright?

  126.      Said "other product" is called "ShareCon". ShareCon is an easy-to-use  
  127. name/address/phone number program for PCs. It is designed for use by  
  128. INDIVIDUALS, but includes provisions for working within a GROUP environment.  
  129. The records that ShareCon maintains are tagged as either PERSONAL or PUBLIC.  
  130. Each individual user keeps their OWN records, on their OWN personal computer  
  131. and/or office network workstation. Entirely at the individual user's  
  132. discretion, ShareCon will produce public MERGE files that other users may  
  133. incorporate into their own records.  
  134.  
  135.      ShareCon makes a great name/address/phone number database program for  
  136. home use. Of course, there are lots of other programs that will do that same  
  137. thing; the trouble with most other ones is that they aren't any good at all  
  138. for business (where you need to share contacts with your co-workers).  
  139. Frankly, life is complicated enough without having to know how to operate two  
  140. different name/address programs; wouldn't it be better to use the same  
  141. program at work as at home? This home/work portability is the MAIN idea  
  142. behind ShareCon.  
  143.  
  144.      ShareCon incorporates a number of features to make it easy to find  
  145. specific records, including a Keywords system. Each ShareCon record may  
  146. contain up to three keywords. Use keywords to group records together. For  
  147. instance, you might attach the keyword "vendor" to all the names and  
  148. addresses of every firm that you buy things from. To get more specific, you  
  149. might attach a second keyword (say, "widgets") to those vendors from whom you  
  150. buy widgets.
